Here’s a little bit about our girls:

Our chickens are heritage breed girls. “Heritage Breed” - an old-time or non-hybrid breed of chicken. Other terms that are sometimes used are “Heirloom” or “Old-fashioned”. When heritage-breed chicks are hatched, they will genetically be like their parents and do not require growth hormones and antibiotics.

Our land and coops are not treated with pesticides, chemical fertilizers or fungicides. The hens are either free range. They eat non - gmo feed, some treats like left over muffins, herbs, kale, arugula, lettuce, and marigolds, and what nature provides. They live a normal chicken life cycle. They wake at sunrise and go to bed at sunset. They run, scratch, fly and play. Our chickens are happy and healthy and their eggs are wonderful. They give us eggs at their pace. We do have a secret - we give them heat on cold Maine winter days and nights. In return we get eggs all year ‘round.

Since we have many different breeds of hens, they provide us with several different colors and sizes of eggs. The one thing that is the same about all of them is that they are fresh and delicious.

Breeds of Chickens: Welsummer, Maran, Columbian Wyandotte, Delaware, Ameraucana, Appenzeller-Spitzhauben, Cochin, Sultan, Silver Spangled Hamburg, Easter Eggers, Salmon Faverolles, Legbar, Delaware, and White Rock.

Snow Days

We are hibernating and planning our planting season for this new year. Our latest endeavors include shoveling out the high tunnels each time it we get a significant snow. It’s a family project with all hands involved. If we get lazy, the snow turns into ice and we have to chop it apart into blocks to remove it from the sides of the tunnel. The small fries made an igloo last year from the ice blocks when we missed some shoveling days and the snow turned into ice.

This is our view from our side of the street. Red barn in the snow is a classic scene for a painting. If I were clever enough to retouch, I would remove the power line and provide you with a perfect shot.

Fair Week and Wicked Green Tomatoes!

Just in time for the fair, our very own wicked green tomatoes are ready and on the stand. We used almost each and every one of our tomatoes this year. Unfortunately the wicked green tomato canning is slim. Get them while you can as there are barely enough for us to save for the holidays this year.

Wicked Green Tomatoes: They have loads of garlic, sugar, hot peppers and spices. The combination is crazy good. Try them on your next hamburger or cold for a snack.

Fall Farm News

The summer crop is almost gone and canning has begun. We are still making cheese and will have cheese and eggs out at the farm stand on the weekends.

So far the test taste favorites are Italian Herb cheese and Jalepeno cheese. They are both a farmers cheese made from creamy jersey cow’s milk. I like to use them on crackers, salads, and tacos.
